The minister of Belarus dies suddenly, after secret talks to end the war in

The Foreign Minister of Belarus has lost his life suddenly today, after it is said that he held secret talks to end the war in Ukraine.

Vladimir Makei, 64, was seen as the only main channel of communication with the West in the hard-line pro-Russian regime of dictator Alexander Lukashenko.

His death came mysteriously a day after he met with papal envoy Ante Jozić where they reportedly discussed a secret peace plan to end the war in Ukraine.

Makei had been foreign minister for a decade and was due to host Vladimir Putin's foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, on Sunday and Monday in Minsk.

Lavrov's spokeswoman said Russia was "shocked" by his death. He was seen as president of Belarus in case Lukashenko resigned.

He was trained in the Soviet military intelligence GRU and had a reputation as Lukashenko's "grey cardinal".

Makei opposed Belarus' involvement in Putin's war in Ukraine and had enemies in the powerful KGB security agency.
