Olaf Scholz officially SPD's candidate for chancellor in February elections

Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz was officially nominated as the Social Democratic Party (SPD) candidate for the German general elections, to be held on February 23.

At the Social Democratic Party (SPD) conference in Berlin, the overwhelming majority of 600 delegates voted in favor of the 66-year-old, giving him a clear mandate.

In his speech, Scholz highlighted the potential risks associated with a possible CDU/CSU takeover and criticized tax cut promises by the rival party, saying they would benefit millionaires and billionaires the most, while ordinary citizens would feel the consequences through cuts to healthcare, pensions and other public services.

Scholz also stressed that the extraordinary situation facing the world requires a prudent, clear and experienced government.

He was unanimously nominated as the candidate for chancellor by the SPD federal board in late November, although there was criticism from the party's youth wing, the SPD Jusos.
