Protests in Britain, the Albanian professor from London: Unfriendly climate towards immigrants
Over the past few days, Britain has been engulfed in unrest, following violent protests against immigrants and Muslims. Prime Minister Starmer said that all measures are being taken to bring the situation under control. Over 400 people have been arrested so far.
The riots erupted after the stabbing of three girls in the town of Southport and the spread of false information on social media that the perpetrator was a radicalized Muslim immigrant. Authorities said the alleged perpetrator was born in Britain and that his family had moved there from Rwanda.
Speaking for the Voice of America, from London, Prof. Andi Hoxhaj, at the University College of London, said that the situation continues to be tense and that more protests are expected in the coming days. According to him, the rhetoric against immigrants has hardened and the extreme right in the country has tried to strengthen this climate even more. Prof. Hoxhaj said that the spread of fake news about the suspected author came because Britain lacks a clear regulation to prevent fake information and that the government is currently working on a new bill to combat disinformation.
Voice of America: Mr. Hoxhaj, how is the situation today? Has the situation calmed down?
Andi Hoxhaj: The situation is now quite alarming at the moment, it is expected that there will be over 100 protests in the following days in many places where there are immigrant centers and immigrant hotels because the extreme right groups have been very capable of mobilizing all their supporters to add to these protests and to protest against immigrants but also to protest against the new government and most of these messages have been amplified because of social media and what happened in Newport near Liverpool. The context of this is that most of the message is disinformation and the biggest problem was that the author was 17 years old and British law provides that when you are under age you are not allowed to give details and it has allowed the public to be misinformed.
VOA: Anti-immigrant rhetoric appears to have become more widespread in Britain in recent years, and some critics say the trend has contributed to the hardening of far-right supporters and scenes like those seen during the weekend. Whats your opinion?
VOA: Prime Minister Starmer canceled the plan for illegal immigrants to enter Rwanda and has promised to reduce immigration. How is the climate towards immigrants in general in your country?
Andi Hoxhaj: The climate is not friendly to immigrants, but also to those who preach Islam. But this is because far-right groups, but also the conservative government, many of the problems that have happened here because of BREXIT and because the economy has not been well managed after BREXIT, all the blame has been thrown on immigrants, or it has been thrown at foreigners and this has increased the hatred many times more against immigrants and one of the policies that the Conservative Party has had was to send them back to Rwanda, but it was more of a preventive policy to threaten immigrants with do not come to Great Britain, but the problem is no longer the arrival of immigrants in Great Britain, but how they should be integrated into society, and here there has been a wide debate about the different modalities. I believe one of the problems that needs to be solved in the future is how we can integrate more into society and how we can prevent some of these social conflicts that we are seeing on the streets of Great Britain these days.
