Russia plans three-day shutdown of gas supplies to Europe

Russian gas supplies to the European Union look set to be cut at the end of this month, following an announcement that the Nord Stream 1 pipeline will be shut down for maintenance for three days.

The canal will be closed from August 31 to September 2, says Russian state-controlled energy firm Gazprom.

The pipeline has already been operating at just 20% capacity following an energy gridlock between Moscow and Europe following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Western countries have repeatedly accused the Kremlin of using fuel supplies as a political weapon.
