The explosion at the Ukrainian embassy in Madrid, one person was injured

An explosion occurred at the Ukrainian embassy in Madrid, injuring an employee, the Spanish Interior Ministry said on Wednesday.

The individual was slightly injured and is being treated in hospital, while the police are investigating, the ministry said.

In response, Ukraine has increased security at all its embassies.

Oleg Nikolenko, a spokesman for Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, said the injured worker's life " is not in danger".

Police say it is too early to know whether the explosion occurred when the embassy employee tried to open an envelope, or simply moved it.

Nikolenko said no one else was injured and that Kuleba "has issued an urgent instruction to increase security at all Ukrainian embassies abroad" after the incident.

"Whoever is behind this explosion will not be able to intimidate Ukrainian diplomats or stop their daily work to strengthen Ukraine and counter Russian aggression, " Nikolenko was quoted as saying.

Spain, a NATO country, has sent military equipment to Ukraine to help its armed forces fight Russia's invasion. The Embassy of Ukraine is located in the Hortaleza neighborhood in the northeast of Madrid.
