White House announces tariff hike on China, goes up to 145%

President Trump's total base tariff on China is actually 145%, a higher amount than the 125% previously reported and Trump himself seemed to imply.

The new number became clear when the text of Trump's executive order "modifying reciprocal tariff rates" was released to the media Thursday morning.

The confusion stemmed from the separate 20% tariffs on China over fentanyl and illegal immigration issues that Trump imposed in February and March.

What the text of the order made clear is that the United States' Harmonized Tariff Schedule had been amended to only increase the reciprocal tariff rate to 125% - leaving those other 20% tariffs unchanged.

They have now combined for a total rate of at least 145% facing Chinese imports, US media report.
