Worst storm to hit Tampa in 100 years, Milton puts Florida on alert
Hurricane "Milton" risks becoming a catastrophic category five storm for Florida, thus threatening this American state, which has faced another deadly hurricane just a few weeks ago.
Milton, which is expected to extend to Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, has intensified rapidly, prompting the evacuation of residents.
Authorities have issued warnings that residents' lives may be at risk on Florida's west coast.
Communities in that area have been dealing with Hurricane Helene late last month.
According to Adam Smith, a climatologist with NOAA who helps compile the government's tally of costly extreme weather disasters, the current figure for billion-dollar extreme weather disasters in the U.S. is about 23 or 24 so far this year.
This number is unofficial and is likely to change. Smith told CNN that the number includes Hurricanes Debbie, Helene and Milton, which NOAA plans to add to the list, and may also add a separate complex of severe summer storms.
