Donald Trump was the target of what the FBI said "appears to be an attempted assassination" at his Florida golf club.
The incident occurred around 2:00 p.m. local time, when US Secret Service agents stationed a few meters away from where Trump was playing heard gunshots.
An agent fired, the gunman dropped the rifle and fled in an SUV, leaving behind the firearm along with two backpacks, a scope used for targeting and a GoPro camera, Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said.
The suspect was later detained by law enforcement.
"It appears that we, we certainly have the vehicle involved in the Mar a Lago incident. And we have the suspect that they were looking for. And now the FBI and the Secret Service will take over that investigation," Martin County Sheriff William Snyder said.
