Trump to talk to world leaders about cutting USAID workforce

US President Donald Trump will speak with leaders from Japan and Panama on Friday to cut the workforce of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) while additional executive orders are expected, CNN reports .

Meeting with Japanese Prime Minister: Trump will meet with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and hold a news conference. The two are expected to discuss deepening cooperation in defense and the economy. The summit scheduled for Friday makes Ishiba the first Asian leader to meet with Trump since he returned to office.

More executive orders: Trump will then make "an Office of the Trustee" announcement and sign executive orders in the afternoon before heading to his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida for the weekend.

Panama call: Trump is also expected to speak by phone with Panamanian President Raúl Mulino on Friday, as tensions between the two countries rise over the Panama Canal. Trump has repeatedly and publicly stated his desire for the U.S. to regain control of the canal.

USAID deadline: The Trump administration is expected to reduce USAID's global workforce to under 300 agency employees on Friday, with other employees placed on administrative leave and ordered to return to the US.

It is unclear whether the court will intervene urgently before Friday at 11:59 p.m. ET, when USAID has said all of its directly employed personnel, barring exceptions, will be placed on furlough.
