Foreign media have published images a few seconds after the prime minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, was shot with a firearm and is currently in critical condition.

Fico, 59, was shot four times in the stomach near the City House of Culture, Handlova, about 150 kilometers northeast of the capital, according to TA3, when he had just left a government meeting when a suspect fired at him.

He was transported to a higher-level hospital, after first being treated at the Handlova hospital, a spokesman said.

A video shows Fico rushing away from security guards in a car, which sped away from the scene.

Police are also seen arresting a man, who is believed to be the suspect.

The event in Slovakia came three weeks before crucial European Parliament elections in which populist and right-wing parties in the 27-nation bloc look set to win.

Fico, prime minister for the third time, and his leftist Smer party won Slovakia's Sept. 30 parliamentary election, staging a political comeback after a campaign with a pro-Russian, anti-American message.
