The former Ukrainian MP is killed with a bullet in the head

Former Ukrainian MP and linguist Iryna Farion died in hospital hours after being attacked, said Lviv Region Governor Maksym Kozytskyi.

An unidentified person opened fire on Farion, 60, on a street in the city of Lviv around 7:30 p.m.

Law enforcement officers are seeking to identify and arrest the attacker.

Reports of Farion's death came shortly after she underwent surgery at the hospital.

Unfortunately, despite the efforts of the doctors, they could not save Irina Farion," Kozytskyi wrote on Telegram.

President Volodymyr Zelensky was informed of the assassination and said that "whoever is responsible for this attack must be punished".

Iryna Farion, who is known for her controversial statements on the use of the Russian language in Ukraine, joined the ultra-nationalist Svoboda party in 2005 and served as a member of parliament between 2012 and 2014.

She was reinstated in June 2024 as a professor in the Ukrainian language department at Lviv Polytechnic University shortly after being fired. Farion sparked outrage when he said on November 6 that he could not call Ukrainian soldiers Ukrainian if they speak Russian.

The scandal surrounding Farion's statements escalated after she allegedly received a message of support from Maksym Hlebov, a pro-Ukrainian student living in occupied Crimea. She published the email on her social networks, after which she received harsh criticism.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) said in November 2023 that Farion was under criminal investigation for both her statements about Russian-speaking soldiers and the leak of the message from Hlebov.
