Afghans in Albania, Rama: We did not open the door at the request of the US, we

Prime Minister Edi Rama has reiterated his position that Albania is a country that has historically shown that it opens its doors to those in need.

In an interview from New York for the French television TV5monde, Rama spoke about the reception of refugees from Afghanistan, while emphasizing that the request for their accommodation did not come from the US government but from the humanitarian organization in the US.

" We did not open the door to the US government at the request of the United States. We opened the door as soon as we were contacted by some humanitarian and human rights organizations in the US, and we said "YES".

Because for us, this is a matter of respect for history, we are a host country, a country that has proudly been the only country in Europe that had more Jews after World War II para than before it, and where no Jew surrendered to the Nazis, we are a country that has hosted half a million war refugees who fled the massacres of Slobodan Milosevic's regime in 1999 and we are a country where it is very important not to forget, that there is a time to seek, there is a time to give.

We were Afghans 30 years ago, and if it were not for the hospitality of the Italians and others we would not have been able to get out of our hell, which was not a hell of the Islamist Taliban, but a hell of the red Taliban. "For all this, for us this is simply natural" , said Rama.
