Meta's lawyer: If Rama does not testify, the process is not complete

Kujtim Cakrani, the lawyer of the Leader of the Freedom Party, Ilir Meta, has reacted sharply to the decision of the Special Court that forces his client to remain in the “glass cage” during the trial. Speaking to the media, Cakrani described this decision as shameful and said that it damages the image of Albanian justice. The lawyer added that, according to him, comparing Meta’s case with these two cases is unacceptable and contradicts the standards of justice.

The GJKKO rejected Ilir Meta's request to leave the glass cage during the session, while it also rejected the request for a live broadcast of the process. The court only approved the request for access to digital evidence, while the consideration of the case will continue at the next session scheduled for June 18.

Excerpt from the statement:

They imposed a security measure of arrest with prison, but after two months that contract turned out to be legal and Mr. Meta is serving detention because of that lobbying contract. Then, in October, when the investigations had been completed and the case had gone to trial, so a request for trial had been made, another contract comes to us from the United States, another lobbying, about which we are unclear and know nothing.

We know that we have a contract, so the Socialist Movement for Integration Party has a contract with DCI, which is an American company. Yes, legal payments were also made, but here the contract was terminated and then it turns out, according to the prosecution, that several other payments were made because Mr. Meta traveled to the United States when he was the Speaker of the Assembly, or by other members, such as Mr. Panariti.

But, in fact, it turns out that Mr. Meta's trips were trips prepared or predetermined by the Albanian Parliament, by the Albanian authorities and by our embassy in the United States. So we are in this clarification that the procedural body must make, because you know very well that in this republic the prosecution does the investigations and not us, the lawyers. We simply have to remove that stone that an irresponsible person throws into the river and we are facing this fact.

Now the problem lies in the fact that, if Mr. Rama goes to a meeting outside Albania, he presents himself as prime minister and as chairman of the Socialist Party. Where is the problem here? There is no problem whatsoever. We are discussing here whether payments have been made or not. We are discussing whether Mr. Meta or the party has been notified of these payments, or not. Is there an invoice that has come to him through official channels, in an email, in some form of notification to the party, and it says: “Look, sir, you have to make a monthly payment of such and such”? There is not. There is no notification.

Dhe, përderisa nuk rezulton asnjë pagesë, dhe këta mendojnë që Adrian Shatku është personi që i ka bërë këto pagesa, atëherë duhej ta kishin marrë zotin Shatku dhe ta kishin pyetur. Sepse duhet të kuptoni diçka: ju e keni lexuar akuzën, besoj, dhe zoti Shatku, si personi që akuzohet se ka paguar 270 mijë dollarë në funksion të Partisë Lëvizja Socialiste për Integrim, nuk është pyetur. Pra, nuk i është dërguar asnjë letërporosi dhe nuk janë kryer veprime konkrete që të tentohet të pyetet nga organi procedues, pra nga SPAK-u.

Në kuptim të kësaj, mendojmë se të gjitha veprimet e SPAK-ut kanë qenë shumë të dyshimta. Mos harroni diçka: SPAK-u i ka kërkuar, nëpërmjet Ministrisë së Drejtësisë, Shteteve të Bashkuara të Amerikës që dosja ose informacionet nga DCI-ja të mos i jepen Partisë Lëvizja Socialiste për Integrim dhe as neve, avokatëve. Si do të mbrohemi ne pa marrë informacion për atë që ka ndodhur me partinë? Ju e patë që edhe prokurori, kur u pyet nga gjykata, nuk kishte asnjë përgjigje për sa i përket kësaj forme akuze.

Kjo është një nga ato vendime që e turpërojnë gjykatën shqiptare. Ju e patë dhe e kuptuat që vendimi nuk ishte ai që pritej, sepse gjykata e rrëzoi kërkesën tonë duke u bazuar përsëri, për turpin e saj, te dy persona të tjerë që nuk kanë të bëjnë me shtetin e së drejtës. Ata nuk janë shtetas të Bashkimit Evropian, por një ukrainas dhe një rus.

Shtetasi ukrainas, vërtet, ishte mbyllur në kafazin e qelqit ose të hekurit, por akuzohej për një akt terrorist me 48 viktima. Ndërsa shtetasi rus akuzohej për cenim të rendit kushtetues në Rusi. Të dy këta persona ishin cilësuar si persona që duhej të mbylleshin në kafaz.

Por, nëse kjo gjykatë e krahason zotin Meta, presidentin e Republikës së Shqipërisë, kryetarin e Kuvendit dhe ish-kryeministrin, me dy terroristë rusë, e kuptoni problemin që ka gjykata. Unë e dëgjova dhe më vjen shumë turp që gjykata shqiptare, me formim amerikan, i referohet Rusisë për vendimet e saj. Kjo është shumë e turpshme dhe e papranueshme.

Dhe ju duhet patjetër t'i bëni publikë këta personazhe. Jo për të më dhënë të drejtë mua apo për të anatemuara gjykatën, por për t'i treguar publikut shqiptar se qytetarët e kësaj republike duhet të gjykohen me dinjitet, të jenë pranë avokatit të tyre, përveç rasteve kur përbëjnë rrezikshmëri të lartë shoqërore dhe mund të cenojnë sigurinë në sallën e gjyqit.

Ju duhet të kuptoni diçka që qytetarët nuk e dinë. Marrëveshja që ka pasur Partia Lëvizja Socialiste për Integrim me DCI-në ka qenë një marrëveshje që, në pikat e saj, i referohej reformës në drejtësi. Pra, nëse janë takuar zyrtarë të lartë amerikanë të Departamentit të Drejtësisë së Shteteve të Bashkuara dhe senatorë, ka pasur vetëm një qëllim: reformën në drejtësi.

Dhe ju e dini shumë mirë që zoti Meta ka qenë një nga promotorët dhe personi kyç që bashkoi Lulzim Bashën dhe Edi Ramën, i cili ka qenë kundër reformës në drejtësi. Zoti Meta, në orët e vona të natës, bëri të mundur që reforma të kalonte me 140 vota.

Therefore, Mr. Rama should not boast today by saying that he made the reform, but should respond to the allegations raised by former President Meta. So I have nothing else to tell you. You will be here at the session, you will understand and you will laugh at the empty, false, baseless and insubstantial accusations of the procedural body.

On the 18th, when the next hearing takes place, we will be here and we will see what the procedural body will request, what evidence and witnesses it will present. You know that in the request for trial they have made available to us the list of persons who have been questioned, and we are talking about about 110 persons who, according to the procedure, must come to the substantive hearings and be questioned.

If they are not questioned, we will ask for it. We will filter every request from the prosecution and, if there are shortcomings, we will definitely ask for them to be called on our side. But don't forget: the key witness in this case is Adrian Shatku, who is mentioned 327 times in the indictment, but has not been called.

Let's not forget that we also have to do the act of financial evaluation, which is incomplete. We also have many other witnesses. Yes, definitely Mr. Rama. You heard it yourself: it was up to us at Unifi, it was up to us at Vodafone, it was up to us at the mining law. So, if Edi Rama does not come here, this process is not complete.

Yes, Shatku will be questioned. If there are contracts, this has nothing to do with Ms. Kryemadhi. He will be asked if he has a contract with the DCI, if he has an agreement with the DCI and if he has other connections. If there is a connection with Ms. Kryemadhi, he will also be asked about his connections with Mr. Meta, how he paid the money, why he paid for the DCI and if he had any subcontractor contracts with regard to the Socialist Movement for Integration Party, or if he paid on behalf of this party.

Who do we call? Call Condoleezza Rice? Call George Bush? He's retired. George Bush is fishing. Now, call George Bush to come and testify here? Everyone would be surprised.

He has met with George Bush, but we cannot tell George Bush to come and testify here now. It would be fantastic if he could come, to see once again what is being done with the American justice system, which, in fact, according to them, speaks Russian. This is the essence of this justice system.
