Von der Leyen: Albania should quickly follow Montenegro

From the EU-Western Balkans Summit in Tirana, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen conveyed a message to Albania, stressing that countries that fulfill reforms should be rewarded with real progress in the accession process.
“The Western Balkans belong to the European Union. This is not just a political statement, but a strategic choice that is being supported through investment, cooperation and mutual trust,” she declared.

The President of the European Commission underlined that the enlargement process must remain based on merit, but at the same time be more dynamic and predictable for countries that fulfill their obligations.

According to her, when reforms are implemented, they should be followed by concrete progress in negotiations, greater access to European programs, funding, and gradual integration into the common market.

Speaking about the enlargement deadlines, Von der Leyen expressed optimism that Montenegro could become the 28th member of the European Union by 2028.

"We hope that Albania will follow soon and that the entire region will come even closer to the European Union. We are ready to build a community with a shared destiny," she said.
