Socialist Party MP Iris Luarasi has brought the proposal for chemical castration of pedophiles back to attention, warning that she will resubmit it to Parliament.

Through a reaction on social media, Luarasi said that she had previously proposed this measure as a civil society activist, and will now bring it up for debate as vice-chair of the Human Rights Commission.

She acknowledged that the initiative will spark public debate, but stressed that society must decide whose side it stands on.

She adds that crimes against children cannot be dealt with sentences that end as soon as the perpetrator is released from prison.

" Chemical castration of pedophiles. I once proposed it as a civil society activist. Today I will bring it back to Parliament as Deputy Chair of the Human Rights Commission.
I know there will be a debate. I know that many will be more concerned about the rights of abusers than about the lives of children who carry trauma for life. But sometimes society must clearly decide whose side it stands on.
There are crimes that cannot be treated with bureaucratic indifference or with sentences that end as soon as they leave the prison door.
The time for a real debate has come ," writes Luarasi.
