Over 600,000 Albanians with expired ID cards, Gjiknuri: Validity will be extended only for the diaspora

Over 600,000 Albanians with expired ID cards, Gjiknuri: Validity will be

The government will extend the validity of cards and passports for Albanians in the diaspora, allowing them to vote by mail even with expired documents.

The news was confirmed by the Secretary for Electoral Affairs at the Socialist Party, Damian Gjiknuri, to Report TV, adding that this will not be allowed for voters here in Albania.

"It is not logical for the Electoral Code to talk about the validity of identity cards, since it can be extended with the same act that has been approved, laws that are not related to each other cannot be mixed. We have the will and it will become a fact. The government will extend through a normative act the validity of all Albanian cards or passports that have expired for all those voters abroad who are registered on the voter list from abroad.

It will not apply to voters here in Albania, because they have all had the opportunity. It has been postponed several times and they have done it and few may have been left without receiving it. Every time there are such postponements, you also have criticism from partner institutions and the European Union. "
We recall that Ilirian Celibashi, head of the CEC, called on the government to validate identification documents so that 600,000 Albanians in the diaspora who are without documents have the opportunity to vote in the elections to be held on May 11.
