How Pëllumb Gjoka got the status of strategic investor from the government

SPAK has completed the investigations against the businessman Pëllumb Gjoka, accused of murder and organized criminal group, as well as against his colleagues in the police and the prosecutor's office, while asking the court to transfer the case to trial.

The Special Prosecutor's Office against Corruption and Organized Crime, SPAK, announced on Saturday, May 4, the end of the investigations against the businessman Pëllumb Gjoka, accused of murder and structured group, as well as his associates, among them a prosecutor and two police officials . SPAK has sent the case to the seven defendants for trial, attaching the data on the seized assets, suspected as the product of the criminal offense.

Pëllumb Gjoka, 49, was arrested in July 2023 as a suspected member of a criminal organization that had committed, among other things, murder and hostage-taking. He is the owner of the company "Imperial Group", with activity in the field of investments in tourism and gambling in addition to other businesses.

In 2021, the Albanian government granted this company the status of a strategic investor for the Silver Sand Resort project, a massive project that should be spread over an area of ​​113 thousand square meters for the construction of palaces, villas and hotels. According to the published documents, the planned value of the investment was 52 million euros, of which a part would be financed by the sale during the construction of the apartments and villas.

The investigation against Gjoka began after the arrival of a file from France. Against him and the other members of the group, there are nine types of criminal charges, including murder, active corruption and money laundering, committed within the framework of the structured criminal group. While the officials arrested as part of the organization are accused of corruption, disclosure of acts or secret data, as well as providing the conditions and means to commit murder.

In addition to Gjoka, the defendants Behar Brajović have also been sent for trial; Edmond Preka; Asthmer Bilali; two police officers, Ardit Hasanbegaj and Oltian Bistri, the latter with the function of head of the Directorate of the Operational Force; as well as prosecutor Xhevahir Lita.

The prosecution says that it has attached to the acts sent for trial the data of the assets seized as the product of the criminal offense. SPAK has seized 390 thousand m2 of forest located in Pulaj-Plazh of Velipoja in Shkodër and five immovable properties purchased for the value of 980 thousand euros.

The Special Prosecutor's Office announces that the case has been divided for other persons under investigation for whom security measures approved by the court have not yet been executed, as well as for other persons involved in these criminal activities./BIRN
