Tirana has 1 million inhabitants? Veliaj's erroneous statement with a simple search
As he lit the lights of five trees that have been placed in the center of Tirana as part of the end-of-year holidays, Mayor Erion Veliaj declared with conviction that today Tirana has 1 million inhabitants.
"Today Tirana has 1 million citizens and almost 1 million tourists every month, while it was not like that years ago, Tirana was not on the map at all. This means that when we Albanians work together, when we help each other, when we encourage each other, when we say to each other, well done, move forward, keep up the work, each of us contributes to making Tirana better, cleaner, brighter, more orderly, more united," said Veliaj, among other things.
But how true is the mayor's enthusiastic statement? If we go back to the data from the last population census , we find that this figure is not at all accurate.
As can be seen, Tirana at district level has 598,176 inhabitants, a little more than half of what the mayor alludes to.
But this figure is not even captured by the census results for Tirana at the district level because it has no more than 758,513 inhabitants in total.
