Albania's conservative opposition is aligned with Western strategic interests

In recent years, the opposition in Albania, led by former prime minister and president Sali Berisha, has faced challenges in gaining legitimacy, with their official seal and symbols held in court.

Berisha never wavered in his efforts to return the Albanian Democratic Party (PD) to its grassroots and assemble a center-right coalition for the 2025 elections. Despite obstacles from international lobbying, government interference and selling of the former head of the opposition, Berisha's extraordinary determination and will help create a real opposition.

Three years ago, many declared him defeated and abandoned, with opportunists quick to denounce not only him but the opposition's cause. Today, after reawakening a movement and waging a political battle against all odds, as only a statesman worthy of history books and political science classrooms can do, he stands vindicated, with the opposition united behind him.

Now that the unconstitutionally created legal problems are over and the conservative opposition is united, I ask the international community to recognize their courage and provide the necessary support — to avoid the mistakes of recent years or the abandonment of 1945 out of hand. bloody of the communists.

Albania's support is crucial for democracy, regional stability and Western interests. This is a crucial moment for Europeans and Americans to build a new contract in Albania based on mutual interests, shaping the next 50 years.

After serving as a transformative prime minister, steering Albania towards NATO membership and closer ties with the EU, Berisha resigned from the party leadership in 2013.

Near retirement, in 2021, the US State Department controversially lined up Berisha without showing evidence, and not accompanied by sanctions from other government units, as in all other cases of sanctioned individuals, applying the conviction that this was politically motivated. He has been under house arrest for six months without charge, seen by most as political and unconstitutional, in a persecution similar to that of President Trump in the US.

Concerns have arisen that the sanctions process has been politicized by actors in the State Department. Republican senators recently expressed their concern in a letter to the White House, noting that the sanctions hurt American allies abroad, especially on the conservative side.

PD ka përshkruar një rrugë të qartë për të trajtuar korrupsionin dhe për të forcuar institucionet demokratike, vendimtare për aspiratat e Shqipërisë për anëtarësim në BE.

Konventa Kombëtare e partisë ka miratuar një Doktrinë Politike dhe Filozofike që do të shërbejë si bazë për programin zgjedhor dhe qeverisës.

Për zyrtarët amerikanë dhe evropianë, mbështetja e vizionit të PD-së duhet të përfaqësojë një mundësi strategjike për të mbështetur një partner të besueshëm në Ballkan, të angazhuar për të çuar përpara vlerat e përbashkëta demokratike dhe stabilitetin rajonal. Duke u përshtatur me axhendën e PD-së, palët e interesuara ndërkombëtare mund të forcojnë trajektoren demokratike të Shqipërisë, të kundërbalancojnë ndikimet e jashtme dhe të hapin rrugën për integrimin e Shqipërisë në institucionet euro-atlantike.

Me kthimin e tij, Berisha ka tërhequr një brez të ri konservatorësh të rinj, patriotë dhe pro-perëndimorë të gatshëm për të formësuar të ardhmen e vendit. Pavarësisht sulmeve të pamëshirshme dhe përpjekjeve për ta lënë mënjanë politikisht, Berisha e ka hapur PD-në ndaj zërave dhe ideve të ndryshme, duke siguruar që ajo të mbetet një forcë politike e gjallë dhe gjithëpërfshirëse.

Koalicioni i qendrës së djathtë është gati t'i ofrojë Shqipërisë një qeveri që i jep përparësi demokracisë, institucioneve të forta dhe stabilitetit, duke shërbyer si një partner i besueshëm për Shtetet e Bashkuara dhe Bashkimin Evropian. Partia Demokratike është padyshim e gatshme të qeverisë, duke punuar në një platformë pro rritjes që bashkon të gjithë ata në spektrin e qendrës së djathtë, që nga libertarianët e deri te konservatorët, tradicionalistët, antikomunistët, marketerët e lirë, mbajtësit e ligjshëm të pronave, klasa e mesme dhe rinia.

As the last Reagan statesman in Europe, Berisha represents a unique opportunity for the United States and its European allies to support a reliable partner committed to Western ideals. PD's commitment to democratic governance, economic prosperity and Euro-Atlantic integration offers a path towards strengthening Albania's role as a stable and reliable ally.

In the delicate Balkan region, a stable and democratic Albania under experienced leadership would provide important strategic benefits. By supporting DP's efforts to build a governing team with integrity and uphold democratic principles, the West can ensure Albania's resilience against authoritarian influences and outside interference.

Embracing the pro-US and pro-EU Democratic Party not only preserves Albania's sovereignty, but also enhances regional security and promotes Western interests in Southeast Europe.

Addressing the unjustified non grata sanction against Berisha and restoring strong diplomatic relations with the DP would demonstrate a new commitment from the United States to its strongest ally in the Balkans. By correcting past misunderstandings and fostering closer ties with the DP, the US can increase Albania's capacity to address the challenges of the 21st century while advancing shared values ​​of democracy, security, human rights human and economic progress.

Embracing Albania's conservative opposition as a partner fully aligns with Western strategic interests and reinforces the region's trajectory toward a stable and prosperous future under democratic governance.
