The Socialist Party currently controls almost 100% of the country's municipalities, for 4 years in a row, like never before. This is thanks to a boycott order given by former DP leader Lulzim Basha in 2019.

But in order to keep the leadership of the Municipalities, the socialist majority will face the opposition on May 14, no matter how divided it is.

The Central Election Commission has announced that the registration of candidates ends on March 27, while the election campaign for local elections in the country begins on April 14.

Edi Rama has confirmed the re-candidacy of some mayors , while he is studying the other candidates through polls. In the blue headquarters, Sali Berisha has announced the candidates through a process called "primary", while Enkelejd Alibeaj's group has pledged to enter the competition with its own team.

What is worth noting in this race is the fact that some of the candidates are expected to leave the parliament seat and run for the leadership of the respective municipalities.

Thus, Belind Kelliçi is running for the main municipality of Tirana from PD. After handing over the mandate, Asllan Dogjani is expected to go to the Assembly instead.

Luciano Boci is expected to submit his mandate to compete in Elbasan. Qani Xhafa is expected to take his place.

Zef Hila, was presented a few days ago by Berisha for the municipality of Vau i Deja. Ludovik Hasani is expected to succeed his parliamentary seat.

Even the SP has "written off" two MPs for May 14.

Deputy Besjan Ajazi who will compete for Gramsci and Shkëlqim Bullarin comes in his place according to the lists.

Benet Beci of the SP is running in Shkodër and this departure is expected to return Ilir Beqaj to parliament.
