The ship with immigrants from Africa sinks in Greece, 16 women lose their lives

A boat carrying migrants has sunk east of Mytilini, the Greek island of Lesbos. 16 women lost their lives, while dozens more were saved. The immigrants were from Africa.

Meanwhile, the search and rescue operation continues, because about 15 people are missing.

The vessel is believed to have left late on Wednesday night from the Ayasmat area near Ayval, in adverse conditions. In the sea strait between the coasts of Mytilene and Asia Minor, strong winds blow and continue to blow.

“We could hear the sailboat crashing into the rocks and we saw people climbing the rocks to escape. It was an incredible sight. We all went down to the Port to help," said Martha Stathakis, a resident of the area, foreign media write.
