Avalanches fall in Austria and Switzerland, 10 people dead

Ten people have lost their lives as a result of several avalanches in the Austrian and Swiss mountains over the weekend. Tourists from New Zealand, China and Germany have been among the dead at several ski resorts.

Austrian authorities have activated the fourth level of avalanche - the second most dangerous - after intense rain and wind in some areas. The fourth level of alert in Austria means that "very large avalanches may occur".

Inexperienced skiers are advised to stay in open areas, while experienced skiers stay away from very steep terrain. Despite the warnings, ski resorts in western Austria are full, due to the winter holidays in Vienna's schools.
