Euractiv echoes the PD primaries: The first time in Albanian political history,

The Democratic Party held the primary process yesterday, the first elections of this kind in Albania.

The candidates who will emerge from the primaries will compete in the local elections on May 14. The primaries process has received the attention of foreign media. "Euractiv", the media closest to the European Union, writes that "PD held primaries for the first time in the political history of Albania, where candidates for elected positions are chosen by members and supporters of the party through preliminary voting within the party".

Euractiv adds that the primary process was calm and orderly, despite allegations of vote theft or manipulation.

"More than 50,000 party members and supporters were invited to vote for the candidates of the largest opposition party in 61 municipal districts. "Thousands lined up at the polling stations in the early hours of Sunday morning, and despite the few allegations of irregularities, voting was orderly and peaceful," the article states.

So far, the first candidates have appeared in several municipalities, while Tirana went to a runoff between Belind Kelliç and Ilir Alimehmet.

"A two-round system is being used - the winner must receive more than 50% of the votes in the first round, otherwise, a second round of voting will be held between the top two candidates from the first round. The results of this Sunday's vote are expected in the next two days" , writes Euractiv.
