Albanian families 'plunge' into poverty! Food prices rise, driving

Food prices continued to increase in March 2025 at a higher rate than the general average. According to INSTAT, the Consumer Price Index in March 2025 reached 2.1%, a year earlier this change was 2.3%. The monthly change in the consumer price index in March 2025, compared to February 2025, is 0.6%.

Data show that food prices contribute almost half of inflation. According to INSTAT, the annual price increase in March was mainly driven by the group "Food and non-alcoholic beverages" with +1.04 percentage points, followed by the group "Furniture, household appliances and home maintenance" with +0.26 percentage points.

Also, the prices of the group “Alcoholic beverages and tobacco” affected by +0.22 percentage points, the prices of the group “Rent, water, fuel and energy” by +0.17 percentage points. The prices of the group “Entertainment and culture” affected by +0.16 percentage points, the prices of the group “Clothing and footwear” by 0.11 percentage points, the prices of the group “Hotels, cafes and restaurants” by +0.10 percentage points, the prices of the group “Miscellaneous goods and services” by +0.07 percentage points, the prices of the group “Communication” by +0.04 percentage points, the prices of the group “Educational services” by +0.03 percentage points, the prices of the group “Health” by +0.02 percentage points and the prices of the group “Transport” by -0.15 percentage points.

Compared to March 2024, the largest price increase is observed in the group "Entertainment and culture" by 7.4%, followed by the groups "Alcoholic beverages and tobacco" by 4.4%, "Furniture, household equipment and home maintenance" by 3.5%, "Food and non-alcoholic beverages" and "Clothing and footwear" by 3.0% each, "Hotels, cafes and restaurants" by 1.9%, "Communication" by 1.5%, "Various goods and services" by 1.3%, "Rent, water, fuel and energy" and "Educational services" by 0.9% each, "Health" by 0.6%. On the other hand, prices in the group "Transport" decreased by 2.5%.

Within the food group, the prices of the subgroup "milk, cheese and eggs" increased by 4.6%, followed by the subgroups "vegetables including potatoes" by 4.0%, "meat" by 3.3%, "sugar, jam, honey, chocolate and sweets" by 1.2%, "fish" by 0.1%, etc.

Compared to February 2025, prices in the "Entertainment and Culture" group increased by 1.3%, followed by the "Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages" group by 1.2%, "Rent, Water, Fuel and Energy" group by 0.5%, "Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco" and "Communication" group by 0.2% each, "Clothing and Footwear", "Transport", "Hotels, Cafes and Restaurants" and "Miscellaneous Goods and Services" group by 0.1% each. On the other hand, prices in the "Furniture, Home Appliances and Home Maintenance" group decreased by 0.1%./Monitor
