Trump closes 'censorship' office at State Department: He rushed to

The Trump administration has decided today to close the Global Engagement Center (GEC), an office housed in the State Department that conservatives say funded an unconstitutional "censorship scheme."

The decision was made public through an official announcement by Marco Rubio, US Secretary of State, who points out that this office was costing taxpayers more than $50 million a year to actively silence and censor the voices of the Americans it was supposed to serve.

"It is the responsibility of every government official to work tirelessly to preserve and protect Americans' freedom to exercise their free speech. That is why today I am announcing the closure of the Global Engagement Center (GEC). Under the previous administration, this office, which cost taxpayers more than $50 million a year, spent millions of dollars to actively silence and censor the voices of the Americans it was supposed to serve. This is contrary to the principles we should stand for and unthinkable that was happening in America.

"That ends today. Under President Trump's administration, we will always work to protect the rights of the American people, and this is an important step to continue fulfilling that commitment ," said the official announcement of Marco Rubio, US Secretary of State.

The GEC, formed in 2016, is an office that Republicans say funded an unconstitutional "censorship scheme" by supporting foreign groups and coordinating with social media companies for apparent efforts to suppress speech in recent years.
