French surgeon who sexually abused over 300 patients sentenced to 20 years in
One of the most shocking cases of sexual abuse in the history of French medicine has received its final verdict. Former surgeon Joel Le Scouarnec, 74, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for sexually abusing 299 patients, including children, the sick and vulnerable.

The crimes took place over a period of over 25 years, from 1989 to 2014. Le Scouarnec pleaded guilty in March, and during the trial in Brittany, dozens of victims gave harrowing testimony about the trauma they had experienced during periods of medical care at his hands.

According to Judge Aude Burési, Le Scouarnec specifically targeted victims in poor health, often under anesthesia or just waking up from surgery. A significant number of the victims were children, including his two nieces, for whom he was previously sentenced in 2020 to 15 years in prison.

The investigations that led to the identification of dozens of victims were based on detailed diaries that Le Scouarnec kept, in which he described in graphic detail the acts of abuse. Many of the victims had no clear memories of the events until this evidence was discovered.

"Twenty years is too little for the scale of the crimes. It is time for the law to change to provide real justice for the victims," declared Francesca Satta, a lawyer for some of the victims.

One of the victims, Amélie Lévêque, expressed her disappointment: "To think that he can walk the streets free one day is shocking. He took our lives, and now he gets his life back."

In his final statement to the court, Le Scouarnec admitted:
"I can no longer see myself the same because I am a paedophile and child rapist. I have heard the suffering of the people I have harmed and I know I am responsible for it."

This case has caused deep indignation in France, reopening the debate on supervision, control and ethics in the healthcare system, as well as strengthening legal measures against sexual crimes.
