BIRN: Parliament resumes work, removing the floor from the opposition
The Assembly resumed its work on Thursday after a more than 2-month break due to the electoral campaign for the May 11 elections, in a plenary session that lasted only 15 minutes.
The majority did not accept the opposition's request for free discussions outside the agenda, while the session was foreseen in the preliminary order of the Speaker of the Assembly as a procedure with only announcements and the approval of a 3-week calendar of proceedings.
The head of the Democratic parliamentary group, Gazmend Bardhi, proposed changing the agenda and introducing 60-minute discussions by deputies, referring to the relevant article in the Rules of Procedure of the Assembly, which stipulates that each deputy is free to discuss various issues based on a set time.
But the majority rejected the proposal with the force of cardboard, while the opposition protested.
The May 11 elections gave the Socialists a fourth term and a new, almost-qualified parliamentary majority of 83 MPs, but the opposition charged on Thursday that the elections were a farce and were influenced by organized crime and the use of public resources in the campaign.
"You gather here because the clans of murderers, drug dealers, drug cartels, bring 28 deputies to this parliament on closed and open lists," said the leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, during an intervention.
After the session was adjourned, Berisha told the media that the majority seeks to avoid debate and transparency.
"..this was one of the most shameful sessions where after an unprecedented electoral farce, instead of citizens hearing all the facts, the opposition's arguments about what happened on May 11, they ran away within a few minutes," said Berisha.
The current parliament is expected to continue its work until the beginning of July, while the new legislature resulting from the May 11 elections will be constituted in September. Reporter.al
