American media: The results of the 2025 elections are reminiscent of those of 1991 when the predecessor of the SP won
The ruling Socialist Party manipulated the elections by using drug cartels, state jobs, a clientelistic system and the secret services of the former communist regime to intimidate voters, the conservative opposition reports to the international community.
On May 27, the U.S. Embassy in Tirana released a short message congratulating the Albanian people on the May 11 elections. There was no mention of the results or any winner. Simply an acknowledgment that the elections took place. This was not what Albanians expected after a contested and rigged process. However, this message differs from the rhetoric of the Biden administration, which, according to the opposition, has often acted in service of George Soros’ interests, with the aim of dismantling the conservative opposition in Albania.
The May 11 elections were a farce. The current government has consolidated a one-party regime that controls all institutions and uses drug cartels to stay in power for a fourth consecutive term, an unprecedented precedent. For almost two weeks after the elections, Albanian social networks have been flooded with videos, posts and comments that testify to the massive manipulation of the process. Meanwhile, the government-controlled media, especially the national ones, are trying to distract attention and intimidate, ridicule or silence the conservative opposition.
International events such as the Giro d'Italia on election day and the EU Council Summit on May 16 in Tirana are being used to shift attention away from electoral manipulation and to censor the opposition.
The results of the 2025 elections are reminiscent of those of 1991, when the Labor Party (the predecessor of the Socialists) 'won' the first so-called free elections, after 45 years of communist dictatorship, through intimidation and vote manipulation.
According to conservative opposition sources: 'In a desperate attempt to secure a fourth term, the current government politicized justice against the opposition. The leaders of the three largest opposition parties were placed under house arrest, detention or face criminal proceedings without any proven charges. Opposition MPs and mayors were arrested or intimidated in violation of basic political rights.'
Similar to the communist past, ballot boxes showed socialist victories of over 97% in some areas. The opposition held a massive protest on May 16, the same day as the EU summit. After the publication of evidence of manipulation of diaspora votes, which exceeded the number of registered voters, electoral authorities claimed a foreign cyberattack.
The government controls all national media, preventing independent reporting. The shutdown of TikTok before the elections was another attempt to stifle free information and expression. Opposition activities were also systematically thwarted.
The parliamentary elections of May 11, 2025 in Albania were marred by systematic violations that compromised international principles of a free and fair electoral process.
The Democratic Party of Albania demands:
International investigation into the elections.
Technical government to manage the integration process and organize free elections.
Freedom of the media and pluralism of information.
Continuous international oversight to guarantee democratic processes in Albania.
The Albanian people have lost hope that democracy is possible. The legitimization of the rigged elections of May 11, 2025, constitutes the end of freedom and democracy in Albania. Adapted from Liberty Sentinel
