Albanians 'crazy' about luxury cars

From Ferrari to Rolls-Royce, along with Lamborghinis and Maseratis, where Bentleys and Cadillacs are also not missing, Albanians, the wealthy ones, currently own 21,814 luxury cars. The majority of them, over 18,000, have engine power over 3,000 cubic centimeters, while 3,668 vehicles are worth at least 5 million lekë.

Due to the special typologies that make these vehicles defined as "luxury", their owners pay the state a registration fee of 70 thousand lek and then, every year, a tax worth 21 thousand lek.

Data from the General Directorate of Taxes shows that last year over 290 million lek were entered into the state treasury, 25.4 million lek or 9.6 percent more than in 2022.

Despite the price crisis and other economic uncertainties, during the past year, more vehicles were added to the abundant luxury fleet. From the first-time registration fee alone, that is, the purchase of the vehicle, "taxes" collected almost 187 million lek.

This figure is almost 37 million lek or 24.4 percent higher than in 2022.

Luxury vehicles in the country are generally owned by businessmen, singers, actors or even politicians. Some of them are owned by the diplomatic corps serving in Albania or even Albanian institutions, but due to the status they possess, luxury tax is not paid for these vehicles./A2CNN
