Netanyahu: Hamas leader in Gaza, Mohammad Sinwar, has been eliminated

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced today that Israeli forces have eliminated Mohammad Sinwar, the current head of Hamas in Gaza and the younger brother of the militant group's slain former leader, Yahya Sinwar.

"Mohammad Sinwar, one of Hamas' key figures in Gaza and one of our most wanted, has been eliminated," Netanyahu said in an official statement on Wednesday, calling the development a significant blow to Hamas' leadership structure.

Mohammad Sinwar had taken over the leadership of the organization in the Gaza Strip after the killing of his brother, Yahya Sinwar, by Israeli forces during heavy fighting in the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas. His brother, Yahya, was the mastermind and leader of the bloody attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, an event that escalated the conflict and started the current war in Gaza.

After the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh in an Israeli strike on Iran, Yahya Sinwar assumed overall leadership of Hamas, while Mohammad Sinwar was positioned as the head of field operations in Gaza.

His elimination is expected to significantly impact Hamas' command network, as military operations in Gaza continue with intensity.
