Comparison/ How to understand the American message about the elections

The US embassy's announcement of the May 11 elections has sparked much controversy. Government supporters unanimously considered it a certification of the elections, even though it did not even congratulate Edi Rama or his cabinet, but only mentioned the Albanian people.

The exact same fact was interpreted by opposition commentators as a distancing from this government, whose leader was neither congratulated nor existed in the text.

They even made a comparison with the State Department's statement at the time congratulating Rama on his historic third term victory.

Compared to what was said in the 2021 elections, the message was dry and much more pale and withdrawn.

"We congratulate the people of Albania on the parliamentary elections and look forward to continuing our close partnership with Albania," the embassy wrote.

To better understand the meaning of this message, it is best to compare and put it in context.

Lapsi.al has chosen to compare it with the American message for the presidential elections in Romania, which took place immediately after ours. It should be noted that an anti-Trumpist candidate won these elections and that US Vice President Vance criticized them in his Munich speech as a refusal of the elites to listen to the voice of the people.

But despite all these divergences, the US embassy in Bucharest announced on Tuesday, a day after the official end of the vote count in the Romanian presidential elections, that they look forward to cooperating with the new president, Nicușor Dan, as well as with the new government that will be installed. So the Bucharest embassy, unlike the one in Tirana that congratulated the people, addressed the winner by name.

"We look forward to working with Nicușor Dan, as President of Romania, and the new government, to promote our shared priorities, such as defense, energy, and trade partnerships," wrote officials from the United States diplomatic mission in Romania on Facebook. This simple comparison is enough to understand the difference. /Lapsi.al/
