Hegseth: War with Iran has cost the US $37.5 billion

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told Congress on July 21 that the war with Iran has cost the United States $37.5 billion so far, up from almost $29 billion estimated in mid-May.

He defended the Pentagon's request for about $67 billion in additional funding.

Testifying before the Senate Appropriations Committee, Hegseth and General Dan Caine, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the additional funding was “urgent” and “necessary” to cover the costs of military operations through the end of September.

Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen questioned the request for additional funding, arguing that the Pentagon still has $75 billion unspent and asked why more money is being requested "rather than requesting authorization to transfer" the funds.

Hegseth responded that these funds have already been allocated to other priorities, including the missile defense project called "Golden Dome for America."

Democratic and Republican lawmakers also asked the US administration for more clarity on its Middle East strategy, after the war in Iran began in late February with US and Israeli attacks.

Meanwhile, the US military's Central Command (CENTCOM) said it had "successfully concluded" the 11th consecutive night of attacks on July 21, targeting "Iranian operational centers, naval capabilities, aircraft hangars, drone facilities, and military logistics infrastructure."

CENTCOM said they aimed to further weaken Iran's ability to threaten merchant shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, following more than 30 attacks on merchant ships over the past three months.

The command said the waterway remains open and reiterated the claim that US forces have helped facilitate the passage of about 900 commercial ships and 450 million barrels of crude oil through the Strait of Hormuz since early May.

Meanwhile, on July 22, the Iranian military said it had carried out attacks on a US base in Kuwait. According to the statement, the Iranian military “launched drone attacks hours ago on ammunition depots and logistics equipment at the US Army ground forces headquarters at Camp Doha, located in western Kuwait, in response to the continued US attacks on Iran.”

The US military has not yet commented on this Iranian claim./ Monitor
