Sinaloa Cartel Boss Sentenced to Life in Prison

One of the most powerful and notorious figures in Mexico's drug trafficking, Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, has been sentenced to life in prison by a federal court in Brooklyn, United States, ending one of the longest criminal careers in the history of Mexican cartels.

The 76-year-old, co-founder of the Sinaloa Cartel with Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, was found guilty of drug trafficking and conspiracy after pleading guilty last year in exchange for avoiding the death penalty. In addition to the life sentence, the court ordered him to pay $15 billion, an amount that the U.S. Department of Justice says represents the proceeds of his criminal activity.

According to foreign media, during the court hearing, Zambada apologized through a Spanish-language translator.

"I am sorry for the damage I caused and for the example I set," he said, calling on younger generations to choose a different path and emphasizing that "violence must end."
