World Cup final degenerates into brawl, Paredes grabs opponent by the throat

Argentina's World Cup defence ended in the worst possible way, as their final defeat to Spain was accompanied by ugly scenes of violence and tension after the final whistle.

The 2026 World Cup final at MetLife Stadium ended with a historic celebration for Spain, but also with a massive clash between players and staff from both teams. As Spain's substitutes entered the field to celebrate their triumph, the situation spiraled out of control.

At the centre of the incident was Argentine midfielder Leandro Paredes, who was sent off for his role in the general melee. Footage showed Paredes grabbing Spanish defender Eric Garcia by the throat and knocking him to the ground, further fuelling tensions on the pitch.

The Boca Juniors midfielder was then involved in another incident with Barcelona talent Gavi, who he knocked to the ground before pushing and attempting to kick.

Argentina's disciplinary problems had begun even before the match ended. Enzo Fernandez was sent off after receiving a second yellow card in the final minutes of normal time, leaving Lionel Scaloni's side a man down.

The two expulsions sealed a disappointing evening for Argentina, which not only lost the final to Spain, but also ended its adventure in the 2026 World Cup amid chaos and controversy.
