Tragedy in Guyana, ferry sinks with 116 passengers on board

A ferry with 116 people on board has sunk off the coast of Guyana, and authorities have launched a massive search and rescue operation to find the passengers.

According to local authorities, eight people have been rescued so far, while the fate of the rest of the passengers remains unclear.

The ferry "MV Barima" capsized near the Iron Punt area, while en route from Georgetown to Port Kaituma. The emergency signal was received at around 23:01 on Saturday, setting in motion an emergency operation involving state and private vessels.

Public Works Minister Juan Edghill announced that rescue teams are continuing their search, but did not provide details on whether there is still hope of finding more survivors.

According to data from the VesselFinder platform, the ferry "MV Barima" was built in 1939, had a length of 40 meters and was equipped with 250 life jackets, two rigid lifeboats and six inflatable boats.

The causes of the sinking have not yet been announced and investigations are expected to begin once the search and rescue operation is completed.
