Albanian Post Money in Casino/ Prosecution Accuses Former Director. Mataj: I Am

New details have emerged from the investigation into the suspected embezzlement scheme at the Albanian Post branch in Durres, where three officials have been arrested on charges of abusing around 69 million new lek, money intended for the distribution of pensions and social assistance.

During the court session, where the security measure was reviewed, according to TCH, the prosecutor also brought other details from the investigation, mentioning the frequenting of casinos by the branch director.

Elisabeta Mataj accepted the defense's word and did not deny that she had frequented casinos, but stated that there was no legal or contractual prohibition that prevented her from going to such venues.

"I am a free citizen. Explain to me what the signed contract is that I cannot go to bars, clubs and casinos," Mataj is reported to have said before the court.

She denied evading justice, stating that she had planned to travel abroad on July 10, while on July 13 and 14 she was at work.

Asked by the court where the money that was allegedly embezzled ended up, Elisabeta Mataj responded that she did not know.

The investigations are expected to shed light on how the scheme was carried out, the role of each of those arrested, and the destination of the sum of 69 million lek, which was earmarked for social payments to citizens.
