Lela: Balluku case, a test for Albanian democracy! EU is raising concerns about

The Head of the Communication Office of the Democratic Party, Alfred Lela, has commented on the latest report of the European Commission on the rule of law in Albania, focusing on the concerns raised about political interference and issues related to justice.

Invited to the News24 studio, Lela stated that the case of former Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku constitutes, according to him, a test for the functioning of institutions and democracy in the country.

"The EU continues to focus on the Balluku case, which it has personified as a test of democracy and integrity. It is a test of how democracy works and the relationship between the judiciary and the executive," he said.

According to Lela, the European Commission's report evaluates the steps made in judicial reform, but at the same time highlights concerns about political influence and the obstacles that may be created to investigations into high-level corruption.

"The EU praises the justice reform, but it doesn't hit the nail on the head. The one who is obstructing justice is Edi Rama," declared the DP representative.

The EC report mentions concerns following the Parliament's decision not to lift the immunity of an MP following a request from SPAK, as well as debates over amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code regarding the suspension of officials from duty during judicial proceedings. According to Brussels, these developments could create a perception of lack of equality before the law and impunity.

Lela on the elections in the Democratic Party: Renewal has occurred
Alfred Lela also commented on the process of the recent elections within the Democratic Party, describing them as an open and transparent process.

He rejected criticism of the lack of change in leadership structures, stating that the DP has undergone a profound renewal process.

"The renewal has happened in four ways. Out of 15 secretariats, 13 are for the first time. There is a predominance of women and young people. There are two new vice-presidents, Nikola Kedhi and Erisa Bajaziti," said Lela.

According to him, the internal elections of the Democratic Party of Albania were conducted differently from the political processes in the country, emphasizing that the candidates had the opportunity to compete against each other.

Lela also spoke about Sali Berisha's role in the political direction of the party, stating that he remains the figure who defines the political spirit of the DP.

"Noka is the party manager, but the political flag of the DP is Sali Berisha. The political spirit is carried by Sali Berisha," he declared.
