Gërvalla files criminal complaint against Serbian minister: We will not tolerate hate speech

Gërvalla files criminal complaint against Serbian minister: We will not

Kosovo's Minister of Justice, Donika Gërvalla, has announced that she has filed a criminal complaint against Serbian Minister Snezhana Paunovic, following the latter's statements that, according to her, incite hatred and justify ethnic cleansing.

Through a post on social media, Gërvalla said that Kosovo institutions will not remain silent in the face of statements that violate peace, coexistence and the dignity of war victims.

According to the minister, the reason for the complaint was an interview given by Paunovic on July 12 in a Serbian media outlet, where she stated that, if she had been in the place of former Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic, she would have carried out the ethnic cleansing of Kosovo in 1998. Gërvalla described this statement as unacceptable and contrary to local and international norms.

"Today I filed a Criminal Report against Snezhana Paunovic. The Republic of Kosovo is not silent and never bows to hate speech, calls for incitement to division and intolerance. There is no room for the glorification of ethnic cleansing, the relativization of genocide and monstrous Serbian crimes and the spread of narratives that aim to undermine peace, security and interethnic coexistence as well as incitement to hatred.

"Public statements that aim to justify ethnic cleansing and the expulsion of a people cannot be treated as ordinary political rhetoric. They carry serious historical, legal and human consequences," writes Gërvalla.
