Murder of Martin Cani, Appeal upholds 16-year prison sentence for Mario Përlleshaj

Murder of Martin Cani, Appeal upholds 16-year prison sentence for Mario

The Court of Appeal of General Jurisdiction has upheld the decision of the Tirana Court, sentencing Mario Përlleshaj to 16 years in prison for the murder of minor Martin Cani.

Përlleshaj was found guilty of the criminal offenses of "murder in other aggravating circumstances" against Martin Cani and "murder in other aggravating circumstances, attempted" against Luis Meçe, who was injured.

For the murder of Martin Can, the Tirana Court had set a sentence of 12 years in prison, while for the attempted murder of Luis Meçe it decided on 10 years in prison. After the sentences were combined, Mario Përlleshaj was finally sentenced to 16 years in prison, a decision that has now been upheld by the Appeals Court.

Following the Court of Appeals' decision, Martin Cani's father, Engjëll Cani, said that a kind of justice had been served, but the family had asked for a harsher sentence. "A kind of justice has been served, but we were asking for more," he said.

The serious incident occurred on November 18, 2024, after a conflict between minors that had started at the 9-year-old "Fan Noli" school in Tirana. The conflict ended with the murder of Martin Cani and the injury of Luis Meçe.
