Protests against Rama, France24: Dua Lipa raises concerns about government

Albanian-born singer Dua Lipa has expressed her support for the protests taking place in Albania against the luxury resort project in a protected natural area, international media outlet France24 reported.

In her podcast "Service95 Book Club", during a conversation with Albanian writer Lea Ypi, Lipa expressed concern about the way the Albanian government has approved the development of the project, criticizing the legal changes that, according to her, were made without public consultation.

"What really worries me is the principle that the government can simply change the law to remove environmental protections, without any kind of public consultation," the 30-year-old singer said.

Referring to the daily protests, Lipa said she finds it "very inspiring" that people are showing so much care and commitment to this issue.

The singer also added that it is clear that the problem is broader and relates to entire structures, emphasizing the need to rebuild "in a way that supports people."

The luxury resort project was first presented in 2024, but the latest wave of protests began after barbed wire fences and heavy construction equipment appeared on the beaches in late May.

Opposition to the project has become a flashpoint for resentment over perceived corruption, with protesters' demands now including the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama.

The singer's comments were welcomed by environmental activist Besjana Gurri, who in a statement to AFP described them as a "powerful message" to the Albanian government.

“I am convinced that her voice will help bring greater international attention to this struggle and raise awareness of the concerns of the people protesting in Tirana,” Gurri said.
