Lionel Messi has dedicated Argentina's qualification to the World Cup final to legend Diego Maradona after their dramatic 2-1 victory over England. After the triumph over England, Messi said that Argentina's success is a tribute to Diego Maradona, who passed away in 2020.

"Diego was truly extraordinary. I never wanted to compare myself to him. For me he is the greatest of all time. Wherever he is, I am convinced that he is enjoying this moment and is proud of the team. This victory is a gift for him," said the Argentine captain.

Maradona made history against England in the 1986 World Cup, with the famous "Hand of God" goal and then with the "Goal of the Century", leading Argentina to the world title.

Messi admitted that the semi-final against England had a special meaning for the Argentine people.

"We felt from the anthem that this was a different match. The fans wanted this victory more than any other. I am proud to be able to give this joy to the Argentines," he said.

The 39-year-old continues to make history at the World Cup. With 21 goals, he is the all-time leading scorer in the competition, while with 13 assists, he also holds the record for the most assists in World Cup history. He will now lead Argentina into the final against Spain, where the reigning champions will aim to defend their title.
