The joy of Spain's triumph in the 2026 World Cup turned into a serious event in the city of Ciudad Rodrigo, in the province of Salamanca, where a 13-year-old lost his life during the fans' celebrations.

According to Spanish authorities, the accident occurred in the early hours of Monday, when part of the fountain, where dozens of people were climbing, suddenly collapsed. The minor was trapped under the stones of the structure and, although he was quickly pulled out and taken to the nearest health center, he did not survive his injuries.

In addition to the victim, two other people were injured in the collapse. So far, authorities have not provided detailed information about their health conditions.

The mayor of Ciudad Rodrigo described the event as a tragedy that has shocked the entire community, emphasizing that a night that should have been a symbol of celebration and national pride turned into a day of mourning.

As a sign of respect for the victim, local authorities have declared three days of official mourning and expressed condolences to the 13-year-old's family.

The fountain where the accident occurred has long been a traditional spot where fans gather to celebrate sporting victories by climbing the stone structure. Meanwhile, police have launched an investigation to determine the causes of the collapse, while the tragedy has reignited the debate over safety measures during mass celebrations at monuments and public spaces.
