The Supreme Court rejects Veliaj's appeal regarding pre-trial detention

The High Court has rejected the appeal filed by the mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, who opposed the suspension of detention terms during the ongoing trial against him.

Veliaj had requested the annulment of the decision that prohibited the calculation of pre-trial detention periods for periods when hearings at the Special Court were postponed. However, the Supreme Court decided not to grant his request, leaving the previous decision in force.

The suspension of deadlines was applied several times during the review of the case at the GJKKO, mainly after the postponement of court hearings.

In the session held this Tuesday, the trial panel decided to postpone the trial to September, due to the absence of Erion Veliaj and his legal counsel. As a result, it was decided to suspend the detention terms again until the next session.
