Zhupa clashes with Gonxha over Kanye West's 4.3 million euros: Albania is burning, you finance spectacles

A fierce debate has taken place in the Committee on Culture and Tourism between Democratic MP Ina Zhupa and Minister Blendi Gonxhe, regarding the government's funding of 4.3 million euros for the concert of American rapper Kanye West.

At the center of the discussion was the use of public funds, with Zhupa accusing the government of choosing to finance a luxurious event while the country faces numerous problems, such as fires, lack of investment in civil emergencies, and social difficulties.

The Democratic MP emphasized that the concert took place thanks to state funding, but raised questions about why 4.3 million euros from citizens' taxes were used for this purpose.

"The event would take place because the Albanian state took care of it with 4.3 million euros. The question is why this money from Albanian citizens was given for this," Zhupa declared.

She also ironized the way in which, according to her, the majority functions, stating that decisions are made without debate and without exercising parliamentary control.

"We don't function like you, where as soon as a request for 4.3 million euros comes in, you immediately approve it. Parliament should discuss, not stamp decisions made previously," said the MP.

On the other hand, Minister Gonxhe defended the government's decision, arguing that the concert was held successfully and that there is no longer any financial risk for the state, as the event was carried out according to plan.

The debate became even more tense when Zhupa brought attention to the fire situation in the country, stating that the funds should have been used to cope with emergencies and not to organize a concert.

"Albania does not have planes to put out fires, it is asking for donations for medicine and has schools that are heated with wood. The need and urgency is not Kanye West, but the problems of Albanians," she said.

The clash between the parties continued with the intervention of majority MPs, turning the Commission meeting into a strong political debate on the government's priorities and the use of public money.

Discussions in the Committee on Culture and Tourism: 

Gonxhe:  This is evident from the debates and discussions that this is not an abstract funding, it is a fixed 4.3 million euros... The public does not need to learn about how the majority, the socialist party, the vote, etc. work...

Zhupa:  You shouldn't do that...

Gonxhe:  That's not the idea.

Gonxhe: Atëherë bie pyetja se nuk do t’i merrnim dot më e pse si do t’i merrnim…

Zhupa: Jo i nderuar ministër, pyetja nuk ishte nëse s’do bëhej, se do bëhej se s’bën me 4.3 milionë euro dhe boshti ishte do bëhej. Atë që i çuat me detyrim. Nuk ishte kjo pyetja. Pyetja ishte tjetër që ju i dhatë përgjigjen dhe faleminderit për përgjigjen. Pyetja ishte: nëse parlamenti, nëse parlamenti do të ngrinte lartësinë e detyrës…

Gonxhe: Ju e thatë me të drejtë, nuk ka shans që ky parlament i kësaj maxhorance të zbatojë ligjin se ne funksionojmë si ushtri.

Zhupa: Në rregull, unë jam dakord. Ajo është përgjigjja në fakt e vërtetë dhe unë ju vlerësoj për sinqeritetin. Të njëjtën gjë po them dhe unë. Zoti ministër, ju lutem të kthehemi te…

Gonxhe: Kemi dhe një komision tjetër mbrapa. Unë do të doja të shteronim bashkë ato gjëra që janë në interesin tuaj dhe të atyre që ju përfaqësoni, që janë njerëzit.

Zhupa: Zoti Gonxhe, mos ki merak, nuk fillon komisioni tjetër pa mbaruar këtu, ashtu siç edhe ne presim komisionin tjetër. Kemi gjithë kohën e duhur për interesin publik. Ne nuk funksionojmë siç funksiononi ju që sa na vjen një kërkesë për të dhënë 4.3 milionë euro e japim direkt. Ne këtu marrim kohën për ta diskutuar minimalisht, dhe pse ju e keni bërë teorinë e faktit të kryer. Tani të lutem më shpjego, pse është nevojë, pse është urgjencë dhe pse këto para të qytetarëve shqiptarë që mund të ishin përdorur realisht në emergjencë… realisht sepse Shqipëria zoti Gonxhe, ju jeni deputet i Tiranës…

Gonxhe: S’ka nevojë fare të më tregoni Shqipërinë. I di të gjitha problemet e Shqipërisë, jam deputet i qarkut, jam i zgjedhur i fundit. Në listat e hapura ka aq shumë halle në telefonin tim dhe aq shumë ndjekje problematike sa nuk besoj se ndonjëri po konkurron për ndjekje problematikash. Jam gati t’ju shpjegoj.

Zhupa: Po t’i dini do të vinte zor që të kërkoje 4.3 milionë euro për një shtet që nuk ka një avion për të shuar zjarret, një shtet që kërkon donacione për ilaçe. Do të vinte zor që të kërkoje 4.3 milionë euro në një shtet ku ngrohen me dru nëpër shkollat e Shqipërisë.

Gonxhe:  I have a lot of respect for you, you are not… you may be political opponents, but you are never a voice of hypocrisy. Please, I have respect, let's deal with objective things. Don't pretend that we are going down a path that I will easily knock down.

Zhupa:  Yes, overthrow us, overthrow us! Mr. Gonxhe overthrows us because Rama knows about you. He has not governed for 14 years, he has governed for only 6 years. With this logic, for just those 2 hours, he spends 4.3 million euros.
