The Strasbourg court sentences Albania, the government must pay compensation to

On Tuesday, the European Court of Human Rights found the Albanian state guilty of violating Article 1, protocol 12 of the European Convention on Human Rights, after being found guilty of segregating Roma and Egyptian children in the 'Naim Frashëri' primary school in Korça.

According to the decision, the Albanian government is obliged to pay compensation of 4,500 euros to five families, who through the European Center for Roma Rights had filed a lawsuit in 2017 in Strasbourg.

According to the plaintiffs, in the Naim Frashëri school when they studied their children, in an average year Roma and Egyptian students make up between 89% to 100% of the enrolled children, even though these communities are a minority in the city of Korça.

The Court notes that the Albanian authorities have failed to take steps to avoid the concentration of Roma and Egyptian children in this school, despite the decision of the Commissioner for Protection against Discrimination for the Ministry of Education and Sports to take immediate steps to improve the situation.

'Naim Frashër' school is not the only segregated school in Albania and according to Roma and Egyptian community activists, this is a problem that is also encountered in other public educational institutions in Shkodra, Berat and Elbasan./Birn
