Vučić cuts short US visit, hospitalized in Serbia

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić was admitted to the Military Hospital in Belgrade on May 3, Belgrade media reported.

Vučić had previously fallen ill during a visit to the United States. He was examined by doctors and after the check-up decided to return to Serbia, according to Serbian public broadcaster RTS.

During his stay in the US, Vučić met with former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

He was scheduled to meet with several senior Republican Party officials before cutting short his visit to the US.

US President's Special Envoy for Special Missions, Richard Grenell, wished Vučić a speedy recovery, after the Serbian leader abruptly cut short his visit.

In a post on X, Grenell also expressed regret that he was unable to meet with the Serbian leader.

According to the Tanjug agency, Vucic fell ill while preparing for meetings with American congressmen.

The Serbian Presidency's office did not respond to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty's request for comment, but RTS reported that the public will be informed of details regarding Vučić's health in the coming days.

Vučić's visit to the US took place a few days before he is scheduled to attend Victory Day in Moscow on May 9. His visit to Russia has been criticized by the European Union.

Serbia, which has good relations with Russia, has so far not imposed sanctions on Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine.

The European Union has repeatedly called on Serbia, a country that aims to join the bloc, to harmonize its foreign policy with that of Brussels.
