Global Innovation Index 2021 / Albania steps back, latest in the region

Albania is taking steps back in the Global Innovation Index (GII) for 2021. It ranks 84th, up from 83rd a year ago, while compared to countries in the region, it continues to be last.

This is the 14th edition of the Index, published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), in collaboration with INSEAD and Cornell University, which ranks 132 places according to 81 indicators from international public and private sources.

Albania is ranked 84th, being evaluated with 28 points. In terms of innovation in institutions, our country is ranked 60th, evaluated with 64.9 points.

These elements include the political environment, the regulatory environment, the effectiveness of government, the rule of law, the cost of dismissal, the business environment, the ease of starting a business, and the ease of resolving bankruptcy. In the second element, human capital and research, we rank 90th, rated 22.7 points.

In the second element, education, government-student funding, student-teacher ratio, school life expectancy, tertiary education, science and engineering graduates, university rankings, etc. are taken.

For infrastructure, in 62nd place, with 43 points. This element includes access to and use of ICT, online government service, online participation, logistics performance.

For market and business sophistication, respectively in 79th and 68th place, rated with 44.1 and 25 points.

In the sophistication of the market, the ease of obtaining credit, investment, market capitalization, venture capital investors, diversification and market rate, etc. have been taken into account. While business sophistication is scanned by employees in the knowledge sciences, companies that provide formal training, high-ranking employees, net high-tech imports, foreign direct investment, the search for talent as a percentage in a business, etc.

Albania is rated 12 points for the final products in research and technology, ranking lower than all other elements, in 103rd place.

Në këtë element përfshihen markat tregtare sipas origjinës, vlera e markës globale, produktet dhe shërbimet krijuese, eksportet e produkteve krijuese, kreativiteti online, korigjimet në Wikipedia, krijimi i aplikacioneve celular.

Mali i Zi renditet në vendin e 50, duke u vlerësuar me 35.4 pikë. Serbia në vendin e 54, vlerësuar me 35 pikë, ndërsa Maqedonia e Veriut në vendin e 59, me 34.1 pikë.

Switzerland has been ranked as the most innovative country for 11 years, followed by Sweden and the United States.

"The changes that are taking place between the major economies are extraordinary," said Bruno Lanvin, an INSEAD member and co-author of the report.

"Apart from the spectacular jump of the Republic of Korea (from 10th to 5th place), it confirms the continuation of the progress made last year by France (11) and China (12), as both are now on the verge of Top 10 of GII ”.

"Overall, COVID did not reverse the trends identified in 2019-2020, as funding (public and private) continued to remain relatively high for innovative companies, even outside the fields of health and bio-sciences." / Monitor
