Researchers warn: Bologna is sinking due to human activity and climate

Bologna, one of the main cities in northern Italy, is facing an increasingly worrying phenomenon: the gradual subsidence of the land, a phenomenon that until now was mainly known in countries like the Netherlands. According to experts, this phenomenon has intensified significantly in recent years and poses a real threat to the environmental and urban security of the area.

According to the latest data, the land in the Bologna area is sinking at a rate that in some cases exceeds 2 centimeters per year. In some places, the subsidence of the land has reached up to 3 meters in recent decades, significantly increasing the risk of flooding in a region already hit by extreme climatic phenomena.

The main causes of this situation, according to researchers, are related to climate change and continuous human intervention. Excessive exploitation of groundwater is one of the most influential factors, as the drying of clay layers promotes landslides and subsidence.

The alarm was raised by Giovanni Martinelli from the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology and geologist Andrea Dadomo, during a conference organized by Confindustria Emilia-Romagna on water resources management. They are calling for urgent intervention and an immediate infrastructure investment plan to protect not only the population but also the region's economic activity.

The phenomenon of subsidence has become a major concern for Emilia-Romagna, where floods are increasingly frequent. The alternation of extreme droughts with intense rainfall has made the region's water system increasingly unstable, increasing the need for preventive measures and long-term planning.
