"You have neglected the youth", Soreca criticizes the parties: The campaign should focus on debates, programs and reforms
"It has been an eventful and hot campaign, but so far we have seen few debates and very few political proposals dedicated to the youth," said European Union Ambassador to Albania Luigi Soreca during the #IVendos conference on youth expectations and elections. .
According to him, the Albanian youth represents 40% of the population and should be at the center of the campaign and manifestos of the parties. Despite the statements of party leaders, Soreca said that this year there are fewer young people included in the lists of candidates for MP, compared to the previous elections of 2017. Among other things, Soreca called on politicians to really listen to them Albanian youth and involve them in real decision-making processes.
The European diplomat stated that he is looking forward to the last week of the election campaign to focus on debates, political programs and reforms.
Full speech of EU Ambassador Luigi Soreca:
Albania is now almost a week before the elections. It has been an eventful and hot campaign, but something important seems to be missing. So far we have seen few debates and very few political proposals dedicated to the most important and vibrant part of Albanian society: its youth. Albanian youth represent almost 40% of the population. They are the future of this country and are future citizens of the European Union. They should be at the center of the campaign and party manifestos. On the contrary, young people feel neglected and forgotten. There is ample research showing that they are less likely to vote compared to older age groups. And this year, there are even fewer of them on the party candidate lists, compared to the Albanian parliamentary elections four years ago. Young people are often said not to get involved in politics because they have no interest. This is not what I have seen in Albania. I have met so many young Albanians who are active, dedicated and full of civic initiatives. So many young people who volunteer and are committed to helping their community. When I arrived in Albania, I set as my priority to engage and empower the youth of Albania. The main commitment of my first Europe Week, in 2019, was dedicated to the "Power of Youth". Albanian youth are tired of others speaking on their behalf. Instead of talking about them, we wanted to create space for them to present their true concerns and aspirations, in their own words, without mediation. We need to support them to speak for themselves. because they have no interest. This is not what I have seen in Albania. Sot do të njiheni me disa prej tyre.
