The city council votes unanimously, a street in Massachusetts is named after

Worcester city council members voted unanimously Tuesday to name a section of Salisbury Street in honor of Albania's national hero, Gjergj Kastriot Skënderbeu.

The common name is to honor the Albanian hero Skënderbeu, who led the rebellion and the war against the Ottoman Empire, local media write.

St. Mary's Albanian Orthodox Church said the naming of Salisbury Street is the beginning of recognition of Albanian heritage in Worcester. They said it will also honor the more than 20,000 Albanians who live in the city.

"It is of great importance and it should be an honor for the city of Worcester, not only for the Albanians, to have this name" , said Frank Zdruli, from the Sons of St.

"Now, if you go to the supermarket, cafe or mechanic, you can almost always find someone here who speaks Albanian ," said Father Mark Doku. "It's been explosive growth in this community."

The honorary name does not change the official name of Salisbury Street or any road signs. The proposal was sent to a city council subcommittee to finalize an implementation plan.
